Elgin man hurt in Hampshire crash on Route 20

A 50-year-old Elgin man remains in serious condition after running his minivan into a bridge support in Hampshire Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Michael Chovancek was heading north on Route 20 and weaving in and out of traffic when he lost control of his 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette and slammed into the concrete supports of the I-90 bridge at about 3:12 p.m., said Lt. Brian Thompson of the Hampshire Police Department.

Thompson said witnesses saw Chovancek passing in and out of no passing zones before the accident, and that he was buckled into his seatbelt immediately after the accident happened.

However, when rescue crews arrived on the scene, he was out of the van and walking around.

He was taken from the accident to Provena St. Joseph's Hospital in Elgin where he remains in intensive care with life-threatening injuries, Thompson said.

Thompson added the road was shut down for about two hours while police investigated the accident.

He added no citations have been issued at this point.
