Cops: Guns found in sleeping man's car

A 22-year-old man is due in court next month on charges that he reached for a weapon when a South Barrington police officer woke him up in his car in the middle of the night.

Police said Paul S. Ditman, who is living temporarily with relatives on the 700 block of Surryse Road in Lake Zurich, was found sleeping in his car in the parking lot of The Arboretum shopping center in South Barrington at 2:39 a.m. June 7.

Police said that they woke Ditman up, he appeared confused and tried to start his car and drive away. He then allegedly reached for a machete that was in the car.

Though no one was injured, a search of Ditman's car, registered in Georgia, turned up two rifles and a BB gun in the trunk, police said.

He was charged with unlawful use of weapons and aggravated assault of a police officer.

He was released from custody on an I-bond and is scheduled to appear July 14 in Cook County court in Rolling Meadows.
