Cancer survivors' party

Health care discussion
The public is invited to attend a health care reform discussion from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Control Alt Design, 1760 Britannia Drive, Elgin. Kay Gamble, a local health care reform activist is co-host of the event, which is designed to inform and engage people from all sectors of the community to learn about the current health care system directly from people who have experienced having to choose between prescriptions or groceries and housing or health insurance, and small business owners struggling to provide health insurance to their staffs. ESO scholarships awarded
Violist Dearion Wright and violinist Karla Barrera, both of Carpentersville, have been awarded the 2009 Elgin Symphony Orchestra's Jean Hove Young Musicians Scholarship. Dearion, a sixth-grade student of Lakewood School, and Karla, a seventh-grade student at Carpentersville Middle School, emerged from a pool of seven finalists after auditioning before ESO Music Director Robert Hanson, musicologist Dan Maki and ESO violinist Susan Thorne. The students will receive two years of free private music instruction at Elgin Community College or Judson University. In addition, the student will receive three season subscriptions to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra Classics Series and free instrument rental during the scholarship period.
Teen fitness class
Teenagers 13 to 18 can work out together with certified personal trainers, and learn to eat more healthfully, in a summer camp that starts June 22 at the Persinger Recreation Center, Peck and Kaneville roads in Geneva. The twice-a-week, six-week sessions cost $150 for Geneva Park District residents and $160 for others. There is also three-week session for $80 for residents, $90 for others.
