Cleanup underway after McHenry Co. fish kill
The residents of a subdivision in the McHenry County town of Lakewood are working on a nasty chore that has only been made worse by the heat.
Village workers and neighborhood volunteers spent much of this weekend scooping dead fish out of a small lake in the Turnberry subdivision and heaping the carcasses into dump trucks.
Thousands of dead fish, ranging from tiny, 3-inch species to large grass carp 4 feet in length were found bobbing along the shoreline last week.
Lakewood Village President Erin Smith says that while the exact cause of the fish kill remains unknown, it may have something to do with the hot weather.
Some area residents say the shallow lake was sprayed for algae recently -- possibly when it was too hot for such spraying.
