Man dies in holding cell after court sentencing

A 20-year-old Yorkville man may have committed suicide moments after receiving a prison sentence at the Kane County Courthouse on Wednesday.

Matthew Brockman was found dead in a holding cell after a judge handed him a two-year prison sentence for an aggravated battery, according to Lt. Pat Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Department.

Gengler said an autopsy will be performed today to determine the exact cause of death, but evidence points to suicide, he said.

Gengler wouldn't say how Brockman may have killed himself because the investigation is ongoing. He did say there was no gun involved.

Brockman was dressed in street clothes and was not accompanied by an officer in the holding cell at the courthouse on Rt. 38 in St. Charles. Brockman was not in custody before the sentencing.

Officials won't comment on how long Brockman was in the cell after receiving the sentence.

"Investigators are looking into the chain of events now," Gengler said.
