Lady luck stops short for Prospect Hts. woman

Lady Luck believes a harsh lesson is the best teacher.

A 51-year-old Prospect Heights woman learned that the hard way this week.

Veronica P. Wolski of 932 Old Willow Road, Unit 202, won $4,000 playing craps Monday at the Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin, according to court records.

When Wolski went to collect her winnings, the cashier refused to give it to her because Wolski had no identification.

So Wolski left but returned on Wednesday, gave a cashier a driver's license and expected to collect her winnings.

Not so fast.

The cashier scanned the bar on the driver's license and then called the cops.

The driver's license bearing the name of Veronica Weber contained the personal information of a man, police said.

Veronica Wolski had used a fraudulent license made in Chicago for $280, police said.

Wolski was charged with felony possession of a fraudulent driver's license and misdemeanor trespass to a watercraft.

Why trespass?

Wolski had enrolled Aug. 8 in Illinois' Voluntary Self-Exclusion Program for Problem Gamblers.

In joining the program, Wolski signed a form acknowledging entering a casino was trespassing.

It further warned "all chips and tokens clearly in their possession will be donated" to an organization that helps compulsive gamblers.

Wolski could have used the dough.

Kane County Judge Susan Clancy Boles set Wolski's bond at $4,000 -- the amount Wolski won at the boat, but couldn't touch.

To make bond, Wolski needed $400 -- but didn't have it, and was taken to Kane County jail.

Her next court date is on Jan. 31 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
