Northwestern women hold off DePaul
Trailing by 10 points with six minutes to go, No. 15 DePaul reeled off 16 points in a row against Northwestern.
In years past, the Wildcats would have stayed on the mat. This Northwestern bunch scored the game's final 10 points to pull off a 59-55 victory.
Junior point guard Beth Marshall fueled the Wildcats' first win over a Top 25 team since Jan. 23, 2005, with a 3-pointer at the 2:09 mark. The Wildcats are off to their first 4-0 start since 1995.
"We've talked all week about winning back the city," said Marshall, who shared game-scoring honors with 14 points. "This is a huge rivalry for us."
NU senior center Amy Jaeschke was limited to 6 points on 2-of-14 shooting, but she delivered 12 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals.
DePaul (4-1), which got 14 points and 8 rebounds from Felicia Chester, didn't just lose a game. Senior guard Deirdre Naughton injured her right knee trying to stop a drive in transition by Maggie Mocchi with 9:15 left in the first half.
Naughton, who's on the preseason Naismith Award watch list along with Jaeschke, entered the day as the Demons' leading scorer (17.5 ppg) and passer (5.8 apg).
