Bond lowered for Dundee-Crown student

A Kane County judge has reduced bond to $500,000 for a 17-year-old Dundee-Crown High School student charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Bryant E. Granados, of the 600 block of Jefferson Avenue, Carpentersville, had been held in the county jail on an $800,000 bond since his arrest last month. He must post 10 percent to be released.

Police say Granados and a 16-year-old boy, who also has been charged but is not being identified because of his age, were sitting in a vehicle near Route 68 and Golfview Lane about 10:50 a.m. April 14 when they opened fire on a rival gang member's van. Three bullets struck the vehicle, but no one was hurt.

Granados' defense attorney, Julio Valdez, argued in his bond-reduction motion that $800,000 was "excessively high" for a 17-year-old who has no prior criminal history, lives with his parents and attends high school.

Judge Thomas E. Mueller rejected Valdez's request, however, for a $50,000 bond, setting the amount instead at $500,000 earlier this month, according to court records.

Granados remained in custody Thursday.
