Podsednik return put on hold

Scott Podsednik will have to wait one more day for his U.S. Cellular Field homecoming.

The 33-year-old outfielder was looking forward to playing in front of White Sox fans again Wednesday night, but the game against the Detroit Tigers was rained out. No makeup date has been announced.

One of the 2005 World Series heroes, Podsednik also played for the Sox in 2006-07.

Released by the Colorado Rockies at the end of spring training, Podsednik signed a minor-league deal with the Sox on April 14 and had his contract purchased from Class AAA Charlotte last Friday after Brian Anderson (strained right oblique) went on the disabled list.

"I'm excited about the opportunity here," Podsednik said. "It's good to see the guys and nice to get back to Chicago. I'm not expecting anything crazy (from Sox fans). But you develop a pretty good relationship with them and when you battle and win the World Series."

Podsednik has played in five straight games since rejoining the White Sox. He's batting .316 (6-for-19) with 2 RBI.

"I'm healthy now," Podsednik said. "I feel like I'm running well, and I feel like I can go out and play my game. That's what I'm excited about, first and foremost. I've got my legs back underneath me, so I'm going to go out and try to make an impact with my legs."

Push it back: Mark Buehrle, scheduled to start Wednesday night, is going to pitch tonight against Detroit.

After the game was called by rain, Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said struggling right-hander Jose Contreras will stay on schedule and pitch against the Texas Rangers on Friday.

"Hopefully, he knows we're behind him and he can take advantage of the situation," Guillen said.

Contreras is 0-4 with an 8.31 ERA, and another bad start likely will force Guillen to pull the veteran right-hander from the rotation.

Floyd floundering: Jose Contreras has been a major disappointment so far, and so has Gavin Floyd.

After winning 17 games last year and signing a four-year, $15.5 million contract in spring training, Floyd is 2-2 with a 6.29 ERA in 6 starts.

"I think Gavin's trying to be too cute on the mound," manager Ozzie Guillen said. "I want him to be aggressive. If you're aggressive and you challenge people and you get ahead in the count, I don't care if they score 400 runs. But just be yourself."

Short pass: New Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is scheduled to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before Friday's game against Texas.
