All goes wrong for White Sox
So, what exactly happened in the White Sox' historic loss to the Twins at U.S. Cellular Field on Thursday?
"We did everything we could do wrong today," manager Ozzie Guillen said after the Sox fell 20-1. "You just name it, we did it wrong. We made bad pitches, we didn't make the plays when we had to make the plays, we made a lot of mistakes on the basepaths and that's the result."
The 19-run gap ties the franchise record for largest margin of defeat.
"It sure wasn't fun," designated hitter Jim Thome said. "It makes for a long day."
It was a short afternoon for White Sox starter Bartolo Colon, who lasted just 2 innings and allowed 8 runs, only 1 earned.
"He struggled," Guillen said. "We didn't help him (on defense) a couple times. I always think positive ... Colon is going to be real fresh for the next start. That's all I can say about Colon today."
Twins catcher Joe Mauer sparked the rout with a grand slam and career high 6 RBI.
"I couldn't wait until the game was over," Guillen said.
Richard reaction: Clayton Richard, the Sox' No. 5 starter, was bombarded with questions Thursday about being rumored to be heading for San Diego in the Jake Peavy trade.
"It's a little bit difficult just knowing that your life can change that quickly on something like this," Richard said. "I know there's a business side and those things happen for a reason, and they make those decisions in the team's best interest. I understand that. I try not to worry about too much and go on with my own business."
Quentin back: In his first game since last Friday, Carlos Quentin came on as a pinch hitter Thursday and went 1-for-2 while driving in the White Sox' lone run.
Quentin has plantar fasciitis in his left foot, but he expects to be in the starting lineup against the Pirates tonight.
"It's annoying, and then it gets painful," he said. "I think we've taken all the steps and the treatment they've allowed me to get here is second to none. Not only immediately, but it will pay dividends down the road, too."
Split decision: The White Sox and Detroit Tigers will play a split doubleheader June 8. Game 1 is scheduled for 1:05 p.m. and Game 2 starts at 7:11 p.m. The Sox and Tigers were rained out at U.S. Cellular Field on May 6.
