Batavia seniors club helps out food pantry
Money seems to be tight for everyone these days, but local seniors are still finding ways to dig into their pockets to help feed local families. Last October, the Batavia Senior Citizens Club started collecting cash at their monthly meetings to donate to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry. To date they have collected just over $800.
"I am so proud of the seniors," said John Marcoux, past Batavia Senior Citizens Club treasurer and organizer of the food pantry donations. "They've done such a terrific job of contributing to the pantry on an ongoing basis. Many of them are on a minimum budget, and they're still reaching out."
According to the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, food is now distributed to more than 300 families.
"Only with the continued support of caring people like the Batavia Senior Citizens Club are we able to provide food to the families who need help," said Stan Johnston, chairman of the food pantry.
The Batavia Senior Citizens Club was started in 1969 with a small group of dedicated seniors. This year the club is celebrating its 40th year and now has 126 members. Meetings are held the third Wednesday of every month, and new members are always welcome.
