Wheeling man 8 years for seventh DUI

A 49-year-old Wheeling man who had been arrested six times for drunken driving since 1989, pleaded guilty to his seventh DUI last week and received eight years in prison.

Mayolo Hernandez, of the 200 block of Renee Terrace, Wheeling, was driving southbound on Wolf Road at Dundee Road in stop-and-go traffic around 6:10 p.m. Feb. 16 when his 1996 Honda Passport rear-ended a 2008 Lexus, reports said.

Wheeling police charged Hernandez with aggravated DUI following the incident. He had prior drunken driving arrests in 1989, 1991, 2003, 2004 and 2006, police said.

Reports also indicated that Hernandez admitted to drinking six beers before driving.

After five DUI convictions, any additional DUI charge is considered a Class X felony, which means the defendant must serve 85 percent of his or her sentence.
