Bartlett police charged a father and son with a series of drug offenses last week after a traffic stop near Grant Street and Lincoln Drive.
Gregory T. Holmstrom, 51, and his son, Justin J. Holmstrom, 21, both of the 900 block of Tallgrass Drive in Bartlett, were arrested around 9:20 p.m. Thursday, April 30.
Police say they initially stopped the SUV the older Holmstrom was driving after hearing a loud muffler, Sgt. Greg Pretkelis said. An officer smelled cannabis from inside the Chevrolet Blazer, and found a cannabis pipe near the passenger's seat where the son was sitting, he added.
Both father and son possessed a small amount of cannabis; police also found another pipe, a switchblade and several larger bags of cannabis inside the SUV, Pretkelis added.
Gregory T. Holmstrom was charged with two counts of unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of more than 2.5 grams of cannabis, but not more than 10 grams. He was released on bond and issued a May 12 court date in DuPage County, Pretkelis said.
Justin J. Holmstrom was charged with a felony count of unlawful possession of 30 grams of cannabis, but not more than 500 grams, and with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
Prosecutors, however, dropped charges against both men in separate court hearings in 2009 after a DuPage County judge ruled police lacked probable cause to make the traffic stop.
