Sugar Grove may start road work in May

The village of Sugar Grove could begin work in June on the $11 million Municipal Drive extension project.

Jason Bauer of Engineering Enterprises Inc. told the village board Tuesday that final approval on engineering plans are expected from the Illinois Department of Transportation within two weeks.

"We think we've tackled all the issues," Bauer said, referring to talks with IDOT and the state's requirements for certain revisions. IDOT approval is needed before Sugar Grove can use $3.2 million it received in federal funds for the project. The village is also using bonds and village water and sewer improvement funds.

Municipal Drive is being extended from Bastian Drive to Galena Boulevard, and Galena Boulevard is being extended from Route 47 to Municipal Drive.

If Engineering Enterprises receives IDOT approval this month, the company will begin the bidding process in April or May, and construction could begin in June, Bauer said. The goal is to complete the project at least a month before the Solheim Cup golf tournament is held in Sugar Grove in August 2009.

IDOT is requiring that left-turn lanes are installed at the intersection of Route 47 and Galena Boulevard. This was not part of the original plans and will cost an additional $1.25 million.

The project includes reconstructing Municipal Drive adjacent to the village hall, extending water and sanitary lines under Route 30 to the Sugar Grove police department, widening Route 30 and installing traffic signals at Route 30 and Municipal Drive.

In other business, the board approved hiring Geneva Construction Company to reconstruct the village hall parking lot for $82,000. Bids were received from six companies and Geneva submitted the lowest bid that met the requirements.
