Senate seat not just about Burris
There has been much in the news about Sen. Roland Burris and his prospects for staying in office. No doubt he will face an uphill battle should he stand for election. However, largely ignored is that the seat has been held by five Senators in 17 years, not even three full Senate terms.
But each time a new Senator is seated, the State goes to the back of the line in seniority, for that seat. >
States that turn over their Congressional members soon become "donor" states, who pay much more in Federal taxes than they will ever receive back. By contrast, seniority pays off. I read that several decades back, a place called Morgantown, W.Va. received almost as much mass transit funding as Los Angeles.
Is this an argument for term limits to level the playing field? Perhaps, but more important to elect the right candidates for the position. Voters need to keep this in mind next year. Thank you for your attention.
