Listen to concerns about truck facility

NVA Transportation is attempting to rezone land behind Nancy Drive off Sands Road, adding 350-plus semi-trucks and a large building. They presented their plans to the Crystal Lake Planning & Zoning Board on Sept. 6. Also in attendance were more than 100 opposing citizens. They believe this will negatively impact the traffic, safety of the neighborhood, as well as add air, noise and light pollution.

There are many young children and families, as well as residents who have lived there since its inception. Over 1,100 citizens have already signed a petition opposing the rezoning and expansion of NVA Transportation (Stop NVA Transportation petition on Change.org).

Route 14, which has struggled with traffic congestion, is the subject of one concern. Many citizens as well as the Planning & Zoning Board have requested traffic studies be done.

Another concern is the diesel exhaust from an additional 350-plus semi-trucks. Respiratory Health Association's study ranks Illinois fifth among all states with the highest number of deaths from PM2.5 diesel engine pollution per capita in 2023. McHenry County is one of the "dirty dozen" counties with the highest concentration of diesel vehicle pollution.

The neighboring residents depend on their wells, and there is deep concern about possible runoff from the NVA truck terminal that would pollute their drinking water. Also, being unincorporated, there are no fire hydrants in the area. A truck terminal fire could easily spread to their homes.

NVA Transportation is expected to answer to many of these concerns at the next Planning & Zoning Board meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 18, at Crystal Lake City Hall, 100 W Woodstock St.
