County hosts pet expo
DuPage County Animal Care and Control will host a multi-shelter pet expo from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16 at the county shelter, 120 N. County Farm Road in Wheaton. More than 50 animal welfare, pet adoption agencies and breed-specific rescue groups will showcase their animals available for adoption. The expo will include dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs and other small animals. The expo also will feature activities for children and demonstrations by pet groups. Teen volunteers wanted
The DuPage County Convalescent Center is now accepting applications for its "VolunTeen" program. Teens looking to volunteer can work in a variety of areas including recreational events and outings, in-house transport, games and gardening. Teen volunteers who assist for more than 12 months become eligible for college scholarships. The convalescent center is located in Wheaton and offers short-term rehabilitation and long-term skilled nursing care for 360 residents. Aurora man receives award
Aurora resident Joe Harrington is the recipient of the 2009 Woods Services Award by the National Council Boy Scouts of America for his service and leadership in the field of scouting for youth with disabilities. Harrington serves as a Cubmaster and Scoutmaster for a special needs pack and troop, and is a lead teacher for a Learning for Life group. He also is associate adviser for a venturing crew and skipper for Ship 2501, which teaches youth to act as scuba dive buddies for divers with disabilities. As chairman of the Three Fires Council's Special Needs Camporee and its Special Needs Committee, he gives volunteer leadership to more than 1,200 special needs Scouts in 11 districts.
Physicals offered for athletes
Students who want to try out for sports, cheerleading or poms in Naperville Unit District 203 should schedule an athletic physical assessment from Edward Hospital by Friday, May 15. The assessments will be held from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 21, Wednesday, May 27 and Thursday, May 28 28 at the hospital facility at 1220 Hobson Road in Naperville. More assessments will be offered from 8:30 to 11 a.m. May 30 and 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 1 at the doctors office at 2007 95th St. in Naperville. Summer camp registration open
To combat summer learning loss, Glen Ellyn Children's Resource Center again will offer a free weekday summer program to children of low income families from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 22 through July 24 at Lincoln Elementary School, 380 Greenfield Ave., Glen Ellyn. NEDSRA offers summer camps
Registration is open for Northeast DuPage Special Recreation Association summer camps. Camp Inspiration, for children ages four to eight with a mental disability, is from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 15 to July 31 at the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood St., Bensenville. Camp Discovery meets three days a week and is held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 15 to July 31 at Glendale Heights Sports Club, 250 Civic Center Plaza.
