Son arrested in Rockford mom's fatal shooting

ROCKFORD -- Police in Rockford have identified both the victim and the suspect in that city's second homicide in a three-day period.

Officers say 25-year-old Franklin T. Byrd fatally shot his 42-year-old mother, Leslie Byrd, inside their home Friday night. They also say they have recovered an assault rifle and handgun from inside the residence.

The Winnebago County State's Attorney's office authorized charges of first-degree murder Saturday against Franklin Byrd, but no bond had been set for him as of Saturday night.

Detectives are still trying to learn the motive for the shooting.

Rockford's earlier homicide last week was Wednesday's fatal shooting of 36-year-old Percel Bruce at his home. Police say the deaths are unrelated.
