Vehicle catches fire after striking toll booth on I-90

Police are investigating an accident on the I-90 Tollway early Tuesday that left one person with minor injuries.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Carlita Joe said a vehicle was heading westbound on I-90 at the Barrington Road Toll Plaza when it struck the toll booth and caught fire at about 5:45 a.m.

The driver of the vehicle was able to escape the vehicle before the car was consumed in fire, Joe said.

That unidentified person was taken from the scene to Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village with injuries that are not considered life threatening, Joe said.

In addition, no tollway authorities were injured in the fire, Joe said.

Two lanes at the toll booth were closed down while the fire was extinguished.

The car was removed from the scene at about 7 a.m., and all lanes were reopened at about 7:30 a.m., Joe said.

The incident remains under investigation, she added.
