Rolling Meadows to use federal funds to fix frontage roads

With almost $4 million in federal stimulus funds Rolling Meadows officials will repair and asphalt about 1.5 miles of frontage roads near Route 53.

The work could begin this fall and last four to six months, said Director of Public Works Fred Vogt.

"We applied for federal funds several years ago but were put on a waiting list," he said. "But then a few months ago when the federal government was looking for shovel-ready projects my hand shot up. I figured we could get this ready in a few months."

More than 5,000 drivers use the frontage roads daily, Vogt said.

Both the east and west Frontage Roads between Kirchoff and Algonquin roads will be patched and asphalted. The project will include curb and gutter work and drainage improvements. In addition, the entire road will be asphalted, Vogt said.

Road closures are probable during the work, he said.

The project will not include repairing the two bridges over Salt Creek. That work will be done in 2010 or 2011, Vogt said.

The $3.78 million Rolling Meadows project is about a quarter of the $13 million given to the Northwest Municipal Conference for distribution.
