Batavia High will reopen Wednesday
Batavia High School will reopen Wednesday, a day earlier than planned, as Kane County Health Department officials have revised their recommendations about dealing with an outbreak of swine flu.
The announcement was made this afternoon.
Rotolo Middle School in Batavia will remain closed through Thursday. The short notice did not allow the school enough time to have a crisis team make plans for helping students deal with the cancer-related death this week of a student. Students and faculty were discouraged from gathering during the closure.
Both schools are now open to staff.
The health department decided that rather than closing individual schools based on a diagnosis of swine flu, it will focus on keeping all students with symptoms of influenza out of school during their period of illness and recuperation, when they are potentially infectious to others, per a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control.
