Suspected spree killer indicted in jail fight

GALESBURG -- A man who allegedly went on a killing spree that left eight people dead in Illinois and Missouri last year has been indicted on charges he attacked correctional officers at the Knox County jail last month.

On Tuesday, Knox County State's Attorney John Pepmeyer announced that 29-year-old Nicholas Sheley was indicted by a county grand jury on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and criminal damage to property.

The charges stem from an incident on April 17. Sheley is accused of taking the legs off a chair and throwing them at the officers and punching another officer.

The officers received minor injuries that didn't require medical attention.

Sheley remains in custody on $10 million bond on the murder charges.
