Cardinals place Ankiel on DL

ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals have placed Rick Ankiel on the 15-day disabled list, three days after the center fielder's headfirst crash into the wall after making a running catch.

Thursday's move was made retroactive to Tuesday on Ankiel, batting .247 with two home runs and 11 RBIs. Ankiel has a bruised right shoulder and overall soreness related to the collision but manager Tony La Russa expects him to be ready by the end of the DL term.

Outfielder Shane Robinson was recalled from Triple-A Memphis. Robinson was batting .345 with two RBIs and 13 runs scored in 15 games in the minors.

Rookie Colby Rasmus got his third straight start in center field Thursday in place of Ankiel.
