Phelps finishes 2nd in heat in return to pool

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Michael Phelps is back.

The Olympic champion finished second Friday morning in the last preliminary heat of the 200-meter freestyle at the Charlotte Ultraswim, his first meet since winning eight gold medals in Beijing.

Phelps touched in 1 minute, 50.46 seconds, just behind Davis Tarwater's winning time of 1:50.21. But the world record holder was clearly holding back, finishing 7ˆ½ seconds off his winning time in China. He had another preliminary swim in the morning in the 100 butterfly and two finals in the evening.

This is the first meet for which Phelps was eligible since completing a three-month suspension. He was disciplined by USA Swimming after he was photographed using a marijuana pipe.
