Students' letters are winners

Emily Schmid, Brandon Evert and Ana Samples, seventh-grade students at Geneva Middle School South, are semifinalists in the Illinois Secretary of State's division of the Library of Congress' "Letters About Literature" contest. Their letters to an author of a book that has affected them have been sent to national judging.

Kaneville Memorial Day rite

Kaneville's 114th Memorial Day program has the theme "Kaneville During World War II." The Kaneland High School band will perform, and all armed services and veterans attending will be recognized. The ceremony is at 10 a.m. Monday at the David Werdin Community Center, followed by placement of flowers on graves and a 21-gun salute at the Kaneville Cemetery. A potluck lunch will be held at the community center pavilion at noon. Meat and drinks will be provided; bring a dish to pass.

Online architecture contest

The City of Geneva is conducting an architectural treasure hunt contest to celebrate National Historic Preservation Month. Visit geneva.il.us and click on "community development/historic preservation." Correctly completed entries will be put in a drawing for gift certificates to be used at Geneva stores. Entries are due at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Help Batavia parks

The Batavia Parks Foundation has an opening on its board of directors. The foundation is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving and expanding parks and green spaces. The open seat is for a three-year term that began in November 2008. There are monthly board meetings and as-needed advisory committees. To apply, send a letter including prior community involvement to the Batavia Parks Foundation, in care of Mike Clark, 327 W. Wilson St., Batavia, IL 60510. They are due June 1.
