Plan ahead for summer travel to favorite New England spots
DUBLIN, N.H. -- Beaches, mansions, hikes and pizza -- these are a few of Yankee magazine's favorite things about New England for summer travel.
The magazine's May/June issue is a travel guide to the region listing hundreds of attractions, places to stay and events.
Yankee's best-of lists are state-by-state. Connecticut's top picks including a seafood roll with a water view at the Lobster Landing in Clinton; best nature preserve, White Memorial Foundation in Litchfield; and best old-time theater, Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam.
In Rhode Island, Yankee magazine's "bests" include fried calamari at Anthony's Seafood in Middletown; best family farm stay, Harmony Home Farm B&B in Little Compton, and best rainy-day walk at Roger Williams Park Botanical Center in Providence.
In Massachusetts, Southfield Store in Southfield earned kudos for best gelato, while Skinner State Park in Hadley was labeled best place to view migrating hawks and Wingaersheek Beach in Gloucester was named best family seaside spot.
In New Hampshire, Yankee magazine says you'll find the best martinis at Cotton in Manchester, the best historic walking tour on the Portsmouth Harbor Trail in Portsmouth, and the best children's theme park at Story Land in Glen.
Vermont's bests, according to Yankee, include Red Hen Bakery and Cafe in Middlesex as best lunch stop, Craftsbury Outdoor Center in Craftsbury Commons as best adult camp, and Shelburne Vineyard in Shelburne as best winery.
Yankee's recommendations for Maine include the Painted Pepper in Steuben as best family farm, best lighthouse tour at Burnt Island in Boothbay Harbor, and the best indoor playground at the Anti-Gravity Center in Carrabassett Valley.
Among other places and things to do featured in the magazine are the beach and lagoon at Reid State Park in Georgetown, Maine; the elegant 19th century Lockwood-Mathews Mansion in Norwalk, Conn.; the hike to Zealand Pond off Route 302 in New Hampshire; snorkeling off of Block Island, Rhode Island; minor league baseball in Chatham, Mass.; strolling the Church Street Marketplace in Burlington, Vt.; and New Haven, Conn.'s famous pizza places, Pepe's and Sally's.
