Switching parties betrays voters

How can these politicians switch party affiliation on a whim or worse yet to insure his re-election? Arlen Specter was elected as a Republican. It is a slap in the face for all those voters who put him office. If you feel it is necessary to change allegiance then resign your elected position and take your chances next time around. His action just adds to the growing mistrust that the American people have for the majority of our elected officials.
