Sonic opens in Lake Zurich Monday

The owners of Sonic, known for its nostalgic 1950s-style system of ordering, announced the Lake Zurich location will open Monday, Aug. 31.

The growing chain with its cherry limeade drinks, tater tots and hamburgers will open a 6 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

It's located at 205 S. Rand Road.

Customers park in a drive-in stall, push a red button on the menu board to place orders from their car. Carhops deliver orders to customers either in their cars or sitting on the patio.

Sonic started as a hamburger and root beer stand in 1953 in Shawnee, Okla. At that time, it was called Top Hat Drive-In. It has become the largest chain of drive-in restaurants with more than 3,500 locations. Locally, the restaurant, which tends to target teenagers and moms with kids, already has opened in Algonquin, Bartlett and Aurora.
