Chief on leave after Amber Alert-delay report
LEROY -- A central Illinois police chief is on leave after a published report indicated his department delayed an Amber Alert for two brothers later found dead.
Leroy officials haven't said why Chief Gordon Beck is on leave.
According to published reports, LeRoy police waited six hours to submit an alert request after Amy Leichtenberg reported her sons missing on March 8. The family had lived in Algonquin.
The report said when state authorities called to confirm the request, LeRoy officials then said the boys' lives weren't threatened. The alert didn't go out until the McLean County Sheriff's Department took the case over, 26 hours after they were supposed to be home.
Nine-year-old Duncan Leichtenberg, his 7-year-old brother, Jack, and their father were found dead March 30.
