Schools should keep range of arts classes

School districts are under pressure to keep art classes as an integral part of the curriculum and still balance their budgets in a tight economy. They realize that schools should continue to value art so that students can benefit from their cultural heritage as well as learn skills that transfer into other areas of learning. Art classes develop critical thinking and the formation of observation, envisioning, self-expression, and self-criticism.

Music, theater and photography can also provide a livelihood and add to the local economy. The study of the arts exposes students to learning about their contribution to human culture and provides them, as well, with opportunities for creating works of art themselves, developing skills with imagination and perseverance. School districts will best serve their students and communities by continuing a variety of classes that foster self-expression in the arts.
