Stolen car found in Bensenville pond
A 1970s Ford Maverick reported stolen in Bensenville Saturday was discovered Sunday in the Redmond Retention Pond, authorities said.
At 5:30 a.m. Sunday, a pedestrian saw the white car partially submerged in the pond off George Street and phoned authorities, said Bensenville Battalion Chief Larry Karp.
Personnel from the Bensenville Fire Protection District helped the car out of the pond and also checked it for bodies - with negative results.
"You never know what you're going to find in there, so you've got to pop open the trunk," Karp quipped."You don't want to get a phone call from the towing company Monday morning."
The Maverick, either from 1970 or 1971, was last been seen five miles away from the pond in Stone Park, where it was stolen the night before, officials said.
As of Sunday, no one had been charged with the theft.
The owner of the car was expected to reunite with it at a local impound lot, Karp said.
The car was not drivable because it had been flooded with water, Karp said.
He expressed hope that one day it would be.
"It was a very nice looking car," Karp said. "I would say whoever owned it kept it in pretty good shape and didn't drive it that much."
