Gurnee police question 'person of interest' in robbery

Gurnee police are questioning a person of interest after a robbery at a furniture story Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the Gurnee Discount Furniture Store, 3535 W. Grand Ave. after receiving a 911 call around 10:42 a.m. for the report of a robbery. Police said an unidentified man walked into the store, walked around the counter, struck the manager several times in the face and head, took the manager's wallet, then fled on foot. The manager was the only person in the store at the time, but people standing in the parking lot told police they saw the suspect run south through the parking lot.

Less than 20 minutes later, police received a call reporting a suspicious Penske Rental truck parked in the lot of Assisi Homes of Gurnee, 3495 W. Grand Ave., just east of the furniture store. Witnesses said they saw a man matching the suspect's description get in the truck and drive away. The truck was found and stopped by Zion Police, and a person of interest from that vehicle was being questioned Tuesday evening.

The suspect is described as an African-American male about 5'11" to 6' tall, wearing a gray or white mask and a light-colored hoodie and black gloves. The store manager was taken to Victory East Hospital in Waukegan by Gurnee Fire Department paramedics for minor injuries. No charges have been filed as of late Tuesday.
