Batavians: Vote no on park district plan
The Batavia Park District is proposing increasing their amount of the local property tax by 47 percent for a new community and aquatic center. According to the park district, the quarry pool leaks 250,000 gallons of water per day. When did this problem first occur, and why hasn't the park district maintained the facility? What is the projected cost of heating the water in the remodeled quarry? The aquatic center is very expensive to operate.
Group fitness, multipurpose rooms and a gymnasium are available in the East Side Community Center. Why duplicate? Should the park district compete with the local health and fitness centers in the area especially when so many change ownership?
Does the Batavia Park District have the employees to maintain the three buildings plus the parks? There is no estimate for the cost of membership in the recreation and aquatic centers.
The quarry may be centrally located in Batavia but there is only one residential street to access the park. Has an impact study been completed?
The Batavia Park District has proposed a $36 million referendum for a new recreation and aquatic center without presenting a business plan. The referendum must be defeated in November.
