Do townships earn their keep?

My politics are left of liberal and I gladly pay taxes. But for our new governor, Pat Quinn, to raise taxes now is just foolishness. To save enough money to pay Illinois' debts, all he has to do is abolish the township offices all over Illinois. Many states do not have townships. We all live in a town or village and/or county which takes care of our local government business. Why do we also need township government? My township (Hanover) has never done anything for me. All of you out there, has your township ever done anything for you?
