Man faces DUI, charges from Puerto Rico

The man who jumped off the Kimball Street bridge Tuesday in Elgin is facing DUI charges, Elgin police say.

Jose Antonio Perez, 31, of 24 S. Porter, Elgin, was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol, fleeing police, driving without a valid license and failure to obey a traffic control device, police said Wednesday.

Perez was wanted in Puerto Rico on unrelated drug charges, police said.

"The only thing we know is it's some sort of drug-related charges," Elgin police spokeswoman Ann Dinges said. "We don't have any further information because it's out of Puerto Rico."

Perez was pulled over Tuesday afternoon for driving around traffic cones along State Street, police said.

As officers were talking with him, he ran off and jumped into the river, where he was fished out about 10 minutes later, police said.

Perez posted $300 bond, but is still being held in Kane County while Elgin police wait on Puerto Rican authorities, police said.
