Conservation group will rededicate war memorial

The public, especially any World War II veterans, is invited to a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 13 at the Izaak Walton League Lodge, 899 Jay St., Elgin.

The Ikes and Boy Scout Troop 10 will rededicate a rock with a brass plate and a pine tree "forest" that was originally planted in 1946 in honor of the World War H veterans. Troop 10 will present the colors at the flag ceremony and there will be some brief remarks. Refreshments will follow in the lodge.

The Izaak Walton League of America is a national conservation organization with over 50,000 members. In 1922, a group of 54 sportsmen and conservationists met at a luncheon in Chicago, and decided to create an organization to save America's environment for future generations. The group named itself the Izaak Walton League of America after the 19th-century author of the literary classic, "The Complete Angler." The league's motto became: Defenders of soil, air, woods, waters and wildlife. This motto defines exactly what they have been doing for the past 75 years through nationwide hands-on programs, education of the public, and involvement in political action.

The Elgin chapter meets for a program and environmental discussion at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the lodge, 899 Jay St. on Elgin's east side.

New members and guests are welcome at any meeting. For information call (847) 741-9393 or visit www.elginike.org.
