Martinez pins down spot in hall of fame

Wrestling has been a major part of Lino Martinez's life.

On Saturday, the former Stevenson head coach's commitment to high school wrestling was rewarded with his induction into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame.

Martinez graduated from Zion-Benton in 1969 and was a two-time team captain at Illinois Wesleyan. He started coaching at downstate Mt. Pulaski in 1974 and had three individual runners-up and a Class A fourth-place team.

He also spent a year as an assistant at Waukegan and then two years as Lake Zurich's head coach before taking over at Stevenson in 1984.

Martinez coached at Stevenson until he retired in 2006 and had state placewinners in Adam Ullrich, Adam Lipitz, R.J. Cohen and Tony Aufmann. Martinez, who became an assistant at Carmel after retirement, finished his career with a 385-224-2 record and coached 62 state qualifiers.

Other wrestlers, coaches and officials were also recognized by the IWCOA this weekend. Libertyville coach Dale Eggert was a Silver Level special award winner with his 400 career victories.

Randy Conrad (Leyden) was selected as the Class 3A administrator of the year and Perry Wilhelm (Mundelein) was nominated for the award.

Kyle Czarnecki (Buffalo Grove), a 3A state champion, was one of four outstanding wrestlers from the Illinois/Indiana Classic Dual. Wade Self (Lake Zurich) was the 3A scholastic wrestler of the year and Danny Vargas (Wheeling) was also nominated for the award.

Other award nominees were state champions Matt Boggess (Prospect) and Lee Munster (Grant) for 3A wrestler of the year, Neal Weiner (Wheeling) for 3A coach of the year and Tim Dodge (Lindenhurst) for official of the year.

• Josh Terrell (Round Lake) earned Division III All-American and academic All-American honors for the second straight year at the University of Dubuque. Terrell finished 27-8 and was named the school's athlete of the month in January and February.

Dillon and Derrick Pouson (Round Lake) also had successful seasons at Southern Illinois-Edwardsville. Dillon was 27-14 with 22 pins and Derrick finished 19-17.

Track and field

John Wood (Fremd), a freshman at North Central, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III championships as he cleared 15 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault to finish second at the Wheaton Twilight Invitational.

• Kevin O'Brien (Palatine), a freshman at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., took first place in the 5,000 meters (15:50.26) in the 12-team Coast Guard Academy Invitational.

• Western Kentucky freshman Ashley Chervinko (Hoffman Estates) captured her first collegiate victory in the javelin (115-4) in the Boston Moon Classic at Tennessee State University.

Softball

Aurora University junior pitcher Anna Snyder (Grayslake) made school history in the first game of a doubleheader against Benedictine.

Snyder had 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory to break the Aurora career strikeout record of 451. She now has 467 after fanning 14 in a 2-hit shutout of Dominican.

Snyder is 15-2 with an 0.89 ERA, 163 strikeouts, 11 complete games, 4 shutouts and only 53 hits allowed in 1002/3 innings.

• Senior Kim Chalekian (Wheeling) hit a go-ahead 3-run homer in the fifth inning for Loras College in an 8-6 upset of Luther College, ranked fourth in Division III. It was the first time Loras beat Luther in Chalekian's career.

Baseball

Ryan Copeland (Elk Grove) helped Illinois State continue its strong start as he pitched his fourth complete game in a 4-2 victory to complete a Missouri Valley Conference doubleheader sweep of Northern Iowa.

Copeland threw a 4-hitter and allowed only 2 hits and no runs in the final 7 innings while finishing with 7 strikeouts. The junior left-hander is 3-4 with a 3.36 ERA, 51 strikeouts and 14 walks in 612/3 innings.

Senior shortstop Collin Salzenstein (Barrington) is fourth on the team in hitting at .296 with 8 doubles and 16 RBI. The Redbirds are 19-12 overall and 9-4 in the MVC.

• Wisconsin-Platteville junior Wil Osmanski (Elk Grove) was named the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference pitcher of the week for a complete-game 5-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 2-1 win in 11 innings over Wisconsin-Superior.

Football

Anthony and Sam Donatucci (Buffalo Grove) of Quincy University were both honored at the team's banquet.

Anthony, a senior, was named all-conference in the Mid-States Football Conference. The team captain also received Quincy's "Chuck French Award" for the outstanding senior football player and the outstanding linebacker award.

Donatucci finished his career with 284 tackles (108 solo) and 3 interceptions.

His brother Sam threw for 2,067 yards and 11 touchdowns and was the only freshman to receive all-conference honorable mention recognition.

Bowling

Freshman Jack Sullivan (Arlington Heights) helped Vincennes (Ind.) University win an NJCAA championship and tie for ninth place in the USBC Intercollegiate Team Championships.

Sullivan had a 670 series and 278 high game at Purdue's Boilermaker Classic this season.

Lacrosse

Freshman Mary Handrahan (Lake Zurich) scored 8 points (3 goals, 5 assists) for Trine (Ind.) University in a 20-7 win over North Central.
