'Shrek the Musical' coming to Ford Center in Chicago

What's big, green, smelly and soon to be singing in Chicago? Why the title ogre of "Shrek The Musical," of course.

Producers DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Productions, Ltd., announced Thursday that "Shrek The Musical" would launch its national tour in June 2010 at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts, Oriental Theatre in Chicago.

The show is based on the Academy Award-winning 2001 DreamWorks film that spoofed traditional fairy tales. It features a script by Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire ("Rabbit Hole") and a score by Jeanine Tesori ("Caroline, or Change," "Thoroughly Modern Millie").

"Shrek The Musical" opened on Broadway in 2008 and is DreamWorks' first foray into live theater (no doubt a move to capitalize upon rival Disney's stage adaptation successes).

No casting for the tour has been announced, nor the duration of "Shrek's" stay in the Windy City.
