Huntley board approves street resurfacing, widening

When Huntley passed a lean 2009 budget last year, spending on infrastructure took a major hit.

But the village was still able to set aside money for its annual street improvement program, which resurfaces streets throughout the village.

This year, the village will resurface streets just south of Algonquin Road, between Route 47 and Ruth Road. They include:

• Douglas Avenue between Church Street and Timer Drive West.

• Phillip Drive, Kathleen Avenue, Matthew Street, Michael Street, Charles Street, Carl Street, Brittany Avenue and Elizabeth Avenue.

The Huntley village board on Thursday approved the work, voting to pay Schroeder Asphalt Services of Marengo - the lowest bidder by more than $85,000 - about $930,000 to resurface the roads.

Fuel taxes from the state will defray $650,000 of the cost; Huntley's capital projects fund will cover the balance.

The village board also took action on two other road improvement projects Thursday: the widening of Reed Road from Haligus Road to Cambridge Drive and the resurfacing of Huntley-Dundee Road. Funds awarded by the McHenry County Council of Mayors will help cover the cost of both projects.

The board signed off on an agreement with Centegra Health System - which is required to widen Reed Road under its annexation deal with the village - that would allow the parties to use $700,000 from the council of mayors to finish the project this year.

At a cost of about $51,000, the board also hired Christopher B. Burke Engineering of Rosemont to supervise the resurfacing of Huntley-Dundee Road.

Huntley can use up to $700,000 in federal funds for the project - with the village contributing 20 percent of the total cost - as long as the village goes out to bid by mid-September.
