Chicago detective charged in double-fatal crash
An off-duty Chicago police detective was charged Friday with reckless homicide and aggravated driving under the influence after allegedly causing an explosive fiery vehicle crash that killed two people.
Joseph Frugoli, 41, was also charged with one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death, said Sally Daly, a spokeswoman for Cook County State's Attorney Anita Alvarez.
Frugoli was scheduled for bond court Saturday, Daly said. It wasn't immediately clear if he had an attorney.
He allegedly crashed his sport utility vehicle into a car parked along an expressway and tried to flee after being helped from his vehicle by a passer-by, but was apprehended quickly and taken to a local hospital, said State Police Sgt. Juan Valenzuela.
Frugoli is an 18-year veteran who worked in the detective division, Chicago police said in a statement. An internal affairs investigation had begun and Frugoli was "relieved of his police powers."
The crash happened shortly before 4 a.m. along the Dan Ryan Expressway on the city's South Side, police said. The car had pulled to the side of the expressway before it was struck from behind, Valenzuela said.
Killed were driver Andrew Cazares, 23, of Summit, and passenger Fausto Manzera, 21, of Chicago, Valenzuela said.
The Cook County medical examiner's office did not immediately release the causes of death, and a spokesman did not return a phone message.
