Carpentersville man charged after sharing meds with sister
A Carpentersville man learned the hard way that no matter how good your intentions, it is still illegal to share prescribed medicine.
William R. Nickol, 54, of the first block of North Green Street, is accused of passing a generic valium pill to his 56-year-old disabled sister "to calm her down," according to court documents.
The woman's caretaker reported the matter to police.
Nickol, arrested Monday, had a prescription for the drug known as diazepam, but his West Dundee sister does not, court records show.
The woman swallowed her younger brother's 10 mg pill on March 9 and did not have an adverse reaction to the medicine, said West Dundee Detective John Scheffler.
Police say Nickol was trying to help his sister, not hurt her.
"He said that she was real anxious and upset about some things - she's had a lot of things going on in her life," Scheffler said. "Basically, he tried to get her to go to the hospital. She wouldn't go to the hospital. He thought he was going to help her out by giving her a pill."
Nickol is charged with unlawful delivery of a controlled substance, a Class 3 felony that carries between two and five years in prison, upon conviction.
Kane County Judge John Noverini on Tuesday set Nickol's bond at 10 percent of $50,000. He was unable to post bond Tuesday and was transported to the Kane County jail. He is due in court May 5 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
