Briefs: Rabid bat is 7th in Kane County

A bat that tested positive for rabies was found in a St. Charles home this week, Kane County Health Department officials said Friday. The bat was found in a bedroom, which led to the potential exposure of two residents. This is the seventh bat found in Kane County this year. This week's bat makes two rabid bats found in St. Charles so far, three have been located in Aurora and Geneva and North Aurora have had one rabid bat each. The finding of a seventh rabid bat continues the trend of a rising rabid bat population for the past five years. In 2007, Kane county only had five rabid bats. In 2006, only one rabid bat was recorded. The health department encouraged pet owners to keep rabies vaccinations current as many rabid bats have been found indoors. Rabies is potentially fatal, but there hasn't been a report of a human with rabies in Illinois since 1954.

Birthday cake for school

Take a step back in time with St. Peter School in Geneva as it celebrates its 50th anniversary with a timeline birthday cake at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, in the school gym, 1881 Kaneville Road. Students, staff and guests are welcome to dress in 1950s clothing for the event. Alumnae Peggy Gurbal is coordinating the creation and construction of a series of birthday cakes that will detail a timeline of the history of St. Peter School. The school opened its doors in 1958 in its first home at South Street and Western Avenue. Fifty years later, more than 500 students attend the current facility. Kane County assessments supervisor Mark Armstrong and his staff have developed a presentation explaining property taxes and how property value is assessed, and Armstrong is ready to take it on the road to any group that wants to learn.

"Fiction vs. Fact About Property Tax Assessments" is also available on the county Web site, at www.co.kane.il.us/soa/presentation.htm. Armstrong showed the presentation to the county board committee of the whole Tuesday. It discusses seven beliefs about property taxes.
