Village blood drive:

The Lake Zurich Fire Rescue Department is planning a village-wide blood drive, tentatively scheduled for Aug. 8 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The department will hold its first planning meeting April 30 at the fire station, 321 S. Buesching Road, at 9 a.m. The department is seeking more co-sponsors for the event, which aims to address the needs of blood banks locally. The drive is part of the 2009 firefighter blood challenge. LifeSource, a nonprofit blood center, will help run the event.

Sex charge against principal:

Daniel R. Pirozzi, 54, principal at Biblical Baptist Church Academy in Beach Park, has been charged with one count of criminal sexual abuse related to accusations that surfaced over the weekend about his involvement with an 11-year-old girl, the Lake County sheriff's office announced Wednesday. Pirozzi, of 39236 Green Bay Road in Beach Park, held "secret meetings" with the academy pupil in his office or different areas of the church, police said. Authorities accuse him of hugging, kissing and fondling the girl over her clothing. Pirozzi admitted in a statement that his involvement with the child had gone too far, according to authorities. Members of the girl's family contacted police and told them the alleged abuse began in March. Police said they believe Pirozzi may have victimized other children. He's been Biblical Baptist Church Academy's principal for the past three years. The academy offers kindergarten through 12th-grade classes and has an enrollment of 61 students. Anyone with information may call the sheriff's criminal investigations division at (847) 377-4250. Pirozzi was being held Wednesday in lieu of $200,000 bond at the Lake County jail in Waukegan.
