Elgin man charged with theft, forgery
An 18-year-old employee at the Popeye's Chicken restaurant in Elgin faces charges of forgery and unlawful use of a credit card after he rang up more than $500 in purchases over three months on a pair of debit cards he found in the restaurant, according to court records.
Edgardo Vega, of the 300 block of North Commonwealth Avenue in Elgin, rang up a total of $566.24 on the two cards in 34 bogus transactions between Jan. 13 and March 3, pocketing the cash from the register, the records said.
Vega, arrested Wednesday, admitted to the theft and forgery, the report said.
He has been charged with two counts of forgery and two counts of unlawful use of a credit card, both class three felonies.
On Thursday morning, Kane County Judge John Noverini set his bond at 10 percent of $5,000, which Vega posted. He is due in court 9 a.m. April 14 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
If convicted on one of the felony charges, he faces up to five years in prison.
