Ticket sales go online for Metra

Wednesday marks the debut of a new Web site for Metra that will provide a long-awaited feature for commuters - the ability to buy tickets online.

The revamped Web site at www.metrarail.com was unveiled Tuesday at a media preview.

Up until now, it's been a cash system for Metra riders.

The redesigned Web site also includes more detailed guidance for Metra rookies on how to use the system, a prominent service advisories section so train delays or emergencies can be easily spotted and a "my next train feature."

For people ready to switch from cash to plastic, the site will allow riders to purchase two-month and monthly passes with credit or debit cards. Users can buy tickets on a one-time basis or establish accounts with e-mail options. All tickets will be sent by mail.

People can also e-mail comments about Metra service to the agency.

The move to the future comes after pressure from lawmakers, who approved a measure earlier requiring the agency to offer credit card sales.

The Web site will accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Discover cards.

The cost of redesigning the Web site and maintaining it for three years is about $3 million. Metra is absorbing the cost of credit card transaction fees for the time being but may reconsider.
