Hasse, Barrington streak to win over Hoffman Estates
After struggling to find their pace on natural grass the last couple of matches, the Barrington Fillies returned home Wednesday evening and instantly found their attacking style to deliver a 2-0 victory over Hoffman Estates.
Senior Kate Hasse notched both goals for the Mid-Suburban West Division-leading Fillies (7-1-0, 5-0-0, 10 points).
Hasse's second was a superb goal with the help of Emily Hyde and Mary Kubiuk. who initiated the lightning-quick counter and found Hasse for a cracker off keeper Vanessa Daughtery into the back of the net.
"I guess we are a turf team," said Hasse, who admitted the Fillies had been a little out of sync on the road away from the fast track of Barrington's new stadium. "We're a lot more comfortable playing on turf, and we can play quicker and possess better and it really showed tonight."
The visiting Hawks (4-2-2, 0-2-1, 1 point), who were short-handed because all-area striker Chrissy Tooren is on the disabled list, played with plenty of energy.
"This was a match which showed what type of character our club had, and despite the loss, it was obvious to me that we have a lot to be proud of after the effort the girls put in against a very good Barrington club," said Hawks coach Rob Schmidt.
Schmidt was quick to praise the quartet of Maddie Harford, Tanya Skworch, Megan Evans and Megan Thomas, who came together in the middle to perform at its best against the Fillies, who possess plenty of speed on the outside and unselfish play when on the ball.
"Those (four) haven't really been together (this) year, but each of them did well for most of the match," Schmidt said.
The Fillies opened well, especially on the right side where Claire McGillem and Caroline Condon appeared to be playing at a higher speed,
The Fillies carried play in the Hawks' end for the first half-hour, with Hasse scoring 13 minutes into the game.
"I thought we came out right from the start to play some of our best soccer of the year," said Fillies coach Ryan Stengren.
But strong play from Daughtery and her back line mates helped the Hawks stay within 1-0 at intermission.
The Hawks' offense began to flow early in the second half. Leah Tednes, who tried to make things happen up top all night, combined with Mary Petit and Colleen Thomas to provide some spark. But the Fillies' defense proved too tough.
Stengren said at the break he thought the Fillies could strike in the second half against the Hawks' 4-4-2 formation, and he proved a prophet when Hasse roared down the center to finish a superb pass from Hyde to make it 2-0 at 46 minutes.
"The difference between this team and last (year) is confidence," Hasse said. "Last year we had so many new players. Now, one year later, we know we can play because of the confidence everyone has in each other."
