Rockford boy fatally struck by school bus

ROCKFORD -- A 9-year-old Rockford boy has died after he was hit by a school bus while trying to cross the street.

Police haven't identified the Nelson Elementary School student, who died Monday morning from his injuries.

Police say the Rockford School District bus was attempting to turn when it struck the boy as he walked across the street. Authorities say the bus driver was cooperating with the investigation, including providing blood samples for drug and alcohol tests.

Rockford School Superintendent Linda Hernandez says social workers will be available to help any staff and students. Officials say students on the school bus at the time of the accident were transferred to another bus and taken to classes.
