Authorities: Man flees nursing home, dies

GLEN CARBON -- Madison County authorities are investigating the death of an 81-year-old man who apparently managed to escape a nursing home hours before being found dead along a road.

The coroner's office says Jewel Lane was found unresponsive early Tuesday morning along a road in Glen Carbon after he shimmied through a window at the Maryville Manor nursing home where he'd been living the past two weeks.

The former Collinsville man later died at a hospital.

The coroner's office says Lane's medical history included notations of Alzheimer's disease, dementia and heart disease.

An autopsy was planned.

An administrator at the nursing home declined to publicly comment about the matter.
