Man accused of killing security guard
EAST ST. LOUIS -- A St. Louis man is accused of killing a grocery store security guard with the victim's own gun during an alleged shoplifting attempt in East St. Louis.
St. Clair County prosecutors filed one count of first-degree murder Thursday against 24-year-old Rodney Wesley.
Authorities say 43-year-old Wayne Groom confronted the alleged shoplifter on Tuesday afternoon at the Schnucks supermarket.
Investigators say that as Groom took the man to a back room to hold him until police arrived, the suspect grabbed the gun and shot him in the back of the head and right leg.
Groom later died at a hospital.
Wesley was jailed Thursday on $2 million bond. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.
