Braidwood nuclear plant unit back in service

BRACEVILLE -- Exelon officials say a nuclear reactor is back in service after it was automatically shut down this week.

Exelon Nuclear spokesman Paul Dempsey says a device that monitors the reactor's cooling system malfunctioned and shut down Friday. The reactor at the Braidwood Generating Station was back in service Saturday evening after workers replaced a circuit card.

Dempsey says there was no safety risk.

No employees were evacuated and no customers lost service because of the shutdown.

When at full power, Braidwood's two units can produce more than 2,300 megawatts. Exelon says that's enough electricity to power more than two million homes.

The nuclear power plant is located about 60 miles southwest of Chicago.
